Completion of Web Site

The web site has now finished for delivery, but there are some features that have not been completed that were in the original design. This includes the search, contact us and site map features due to time constraints and the more complex requirements in the coding. There are individual links to each category of choice with address details if applicable. All that remains is the submission of the coding and write up of the web site development tomorrow. Much has been learnt during this course and a better understanding of what is involved in the development of a web site.

One Week to the Finish Date

It has now come to the stage of finishing off the web site and what this has involved is adding links on the areas of interest. This will take the user outside of the web site to a dedicated web site which will have more details available. I’ve still to finish off the site map and search function which is proving to be troublesome with the coding. I will see how this develops over the next few days as I have to get everything ready for the submission date in just over a week’s time.

Week Ending 29/11/09

During this week all the category sub-pages have been developed. As was mentioned last week the sub-pages are based on the template of the home page and the only thing that changes is what tourist attraction is mentioned. The parameters of the search function have still to be entered into the coding. On the home page the site map has still to be generated, but can be constructed soon as the web site layout in general is almost complete. I’ve run the web site through the WC3.org checking for errors and found four. These can be resolved mostly using CSS, but this will require some experiments in the coding to resolve the errors. With only two weeks left to completion the web site is on target to finish on time.

Web Site Status 221109

Much referencing is being made with regards to the workings of the Dreamweaver application, and as was mentioned last week has involved trial and error using the application. I’ve concentrated on completing the home page as this will be used to keep the sub pages uniformed. This is as complete at the moment as I can expect, with links added into the code, but the links have still to be constructed. In the home page I’ve added another column which was not in the original design with the following links; Home, Castles, Cities, Lochs, Museums, Site Map and Contact Us. Overall the web site is starting to take shape and should be complete on schedule within 3 weeks.

Progress in Construction of Web Site

During this week the construction of the web site has started using the Dreamweaver application. This has involved trial and error using the application, but the home page is starting to take shape. On the home page at the top left is a icon of the Scottish flag and to the right of this is the title “Tourist Attractions in Scotland”. To the right of this is a space for entering text to make a search of the site. At the bottom of the web page there is an email contact link. In the middle of the web page and taking up the majority of the page are four icons equally spaced and with a text description next to each. Each icon represents a category which are; Castles, Cities, Lochs and Museums. By clicking on an icon will take the user to the category main page. Basic images are being used at the moment which will be changed at later date. The category text is already inserted and all that remains are adjusts to the home page which includes the search button and function.

Blog for week ending 081109

I’ve continued this week to look at the web site development tool Dreamweaver. As mentioned in my previous blog I had no knowledge of the workings of Dreamweaver, so I discovered about the objects panel which can be use to insert images, pictures and frames to name a few. Frames are used together with framesets which defines the structure of a web page, to construct the web page itself. The use of frames it would seem will be used in the development of the web site to construct the basic layout of each page that is required.
It will still require a fair amount of reading of the Dreamweaver product to achieve the results that I require for the web site, so the reading continues for the moment.

Beginning this week the presentation was tweaked before submission. The main changes involved using a white background for the web site, using black text and for titled areas this will be highlighted in a blue border around the text. For simplicity the web site will be set to a default size no matter want the user will be viewing in. These changes are to make the web site as basic a possible, but not to basic. I’ve notice during the research into web sites it appears that some are possibly too cluttered and the use of different colours over steps the mark. This of course may just be my personal preference, but as the development of the web site continues this may change. I’ve decided to use Dreamweaver as the web site development tool and since I’ve not used this software before there will be some study involved in the use of the software to obtain the results I’m looking for in the web site. I’ve chosen Dreamweaver as it one of the market leaders and although I’m unfamiliar with the software this would be the same of any other web development tool I would have selected.

25th October 2009 Weekly Post

Today the 25^th October is the weekly progress that has been made on the web site development based on tourism in Scotland.

Beginning at the start of the week by reviewing the previous weeks work to get a better picture of how the website will look and placing the pieces together for the submission of a PowerPoint presentation of the general structure and look that hopefully won’t change too much over the following weeks.

The web site will have a blue background to it due to the colours link to Scotland throughout the web site with white text. I will base the site on a strict hierarchy structure from the main page for accessing the various themes covered in the web site. These are in alphabetical order and are as follows. 1. Castles. 2. Cities. 3. Lochs and 4. Museums. Each web page on a particular subject will have a picture icon and name which can be clicked to get more detailed information on the attraction. This will include details on the attraction and travelling details on how to visit it. Going back to the main page of the web site it will also include a search option at the top right and have contact details at the bottom middle of the page.

With the above information a PowerPoint presentation was constructed to which give a better ideal of how the web site will look and also to hand in as part of the assessment in the construction of the web site. The details that I included are who the website for and the groups it’s aimed at with their characteristics detail of the main home page, sub pages with links and general layout of the web site. On the main page will be a logo of a small Scottish flag and the main themes will have images to go with the text and link information on them. Finally due credit is given in a bibliography of websites reference for ideas on the conduction and layout of the web site. These sites mostly involve the design tourism sites and what they offer to the public, but sites like the BBC and eBay are referenced because they where used in how sites are constructed for established businesses and looking at the design they use for their web sites.

Start of Web Design

This is the start of the development of a web site based on tourism in Scotland, which is part of BSc in Computing Networking at Cumbernauld College.
